I was invited to be the guest speaker at a dinner meeting that took place last night. During the meal I sat next to the president of this organization and we got to talking about his work and his team. As he was describing them to me he used the word “energized.” I asked him what he meant by that. He quickly and easily explained that they have high expertise, that they take ownership of their work and cherish their independence, that they consistently fight for what they believe in and that some of those fights end up in some tough conflicts. He said they have big goals and a small staff so it really matters that they get as much on the table as they can and work together to get things figured out. He made it clear that they have a strong track record of doing exactly that.

I said, “Wow, you’ve really got it figured out. How did you do that?”

He replied, “It’s not complicated: I do the hiring.”

Enough said. Please pass the salt.
